News ReleasesThe Walmart Foundation and Portland East Walmart Store AidLents Neighborhood with Marysville Elementary Rebuilding Donation Marysville Elementary staff will meet with Walmart associates and management team to receive a check for $9,000 PORTLAND, Ore. (Feb. 17, 2010) – Eastport Plaza Walmart Associates will attend Marysville Elementary School on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 8:45 a.m. to present a $9,000 check to the school’s principal, teachers and staff. The check represents an $8,000 contribution from the Walmart Foundation and $1,000 contributed by Eastport Plaza Walmart Associates. Portland East Walmart Store Manager, Ron West, and store associates were affected by the devastating fire at one of their neighborhood schools. They have rallied together and designated Marysville Elementary as one of their community priorities. All associates and teaching staff will gather at their temporary location, Rose City Park Elementary School, located at 2334 NE 57th Ave., in Portland for the event. “Walmart believes in the strength that schools and teachers give to children,” said Jennifer Spall, Walmart senior manager, public affairs and government relations. “Rebuilding Marysville Elementary is a community need and an effort that Walmart takes seriously to ensure the school’s continued legacy of learning and education.” The 87-year-old historic school, located only blocks from the Walmart at 4200 SE 82nd Ave., was heavily damaged by a three-alarm fire in early November 2009. “Many of the children and families of Marysville are people we know,” said Ron West. “The Walmart Foundation encourages associates to get involved in charitable organizations that matter to their families and the communities where they live and work.” Marysville Elementary depends on the support of its community – and each other – while rebuilding plans are discussed. Currently the school does not have an arts program and school administrators hope to use the $9,000 donation to hire an art teacher. “The fire changed the lives of everyone who is a part of our school. It [was] a day we will never forget. Walmart’s support encourages us to move forward,” said Principal Lana Penley. “Kids are back in class; they are learning and having fun. We want the kids to do some healing through the arts, working through the situation and enjoying the sense of being a child.” ABOUT PHILANTHROPY AT WAL-MART STORES INC. Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
