News ReleasesWal-Mart Announces Partnership with Jackson County Libraries; Gives $25,000 to Summer Reading Programs At a news conference Monday, May 5, Wal-Mart officials gave $25,000 to the Jackson County Library Foundation to fund the library’s 2008 Summer Reading Program. The program has not operated since Summer 2006 due to budget restraints and library closures. “We try and stay connected to what’s making news in the communities we operate in and earlier this year we began noticing a lot of coverage on the funding issues that Jackson County’s libraries were having,” said Wal-Mart Spokeswoman Jennifer Spall. “We see this as the beginning of a great partnership between Wal-Mart and the Jackson County Library system.” Jim Olney, executive director of Jackson County Library Foundation, was on hand to receive the $25,000 check and talked about the importance of summer reading programs to extend a child’s education beyond the nine-month school year. “Keeping libraries open and creating summer reading programs where kids are rewarded for continuing to read can make all the difference in September when they go back to school.” Wal-Mart, which operates three stores in Jackson County, plans to continue looking for opportunities to partner with the Jackson County Library Foundation.
